CWTS - Physics Style

September 5th, 2007 by bouncingneutrinos

Library_1

I used to make jokes on what I fancy CWTS would be like for Physics majors. Jokes like: Maybe physics majors would be sent to the war at Basilan to compute for the trajectory of artillery fire and stuffs like that. CWTS afterall stands for Community Welfare Training Service and what more service can we give the Filipino community than to use our knowledge of Physics against the insurgents in Mindanao? It is afterall for the protection of Democracy! Hahaha! Kidding.

Anyway, the National Institute does not share my fancy to send their students to the warfront. So in what way did NIP deem we serve the community? By staying in the library: for a sum of 56 hours this semester. STARTING 2 WEEKS AGO!!! How could we do that with only a month to go ’til the end of classes?! And in what way do physics majors serve the country by "geekifying" themselves in the library for hours?! Basilan would’ve been better; there’s no Medal of Valor for understanding Quantum Mechanics until I exsanguine from nasal hemorrhage.

But as it turned out, it wasn’t all bad. The NIP library is "my kind" of library. It isn’t restricted like the other campus libraries: no ID needed and we can be noisy - its so free… it’s liberating! The airconditioning is perfect, and we can use the computers with internet access and printer - for free! And the BIG plus is: other than us physics majors, no one else is there that sometimes I’m all alone! It’s absolutely perfect for spending quiet times reading the Bible. And it’s filled with tons of diverse books, but of course only about Physics - just when you thought it can’t get more complicated.

As of now I’ve only scraped 15 hours: 41 hours to go! Now I only need to reach near light speed velocity to get this over and done with - perhaps after time dilation in my reference frame, I would be thinner and just in time for the sembreak.

Joby’s Birthday!

Joby turned 20 last Friday. He treated us to dinner and movie, thanks man! We ate at Gilligan’s and I didn’t like the service, I discourage you to eat there. We watched Evan Almighty, not witty nor very funny; I don’t recommend it. But that’s not the point. What bought the evening was old friends meeting again and catching up with one another, perhaps not on stories but their company sure was a breath of fresh air after being fed up from all the Physics.

(Marco made us do the "Korean" pose. Nathan and Joby were not feeling too cooperative.)

1 vs 100

August 27th, 2007 by bouncingneutrinos

1vs100

Mr. Ariel Rodriguez from ABS CBN
contacted me on short notice last week if I could join their new gameshow: 1 vs
100. At first I was reluctant since most of my friends don’t want to join me
but my "game" attitude got the best of me; SO… I’M GOING TO BE SEEN
ON NATIONAL TV! (I think).

The game involves a
"1" who in this case is Mariel Rodriguez who needs to beat the
"100" or "the mob" which includes me to win 2,000,000
pesos. Every question has a corresponding amount of money and is multiplied by
the number of people in the mob that got a wrong answer and is eliminated. The
mob only has 6 seconds to answer trivia ranging from the Paris Hilton perfume to the fattest of Snow White’s dwarves.

I went to the station with my
friend kuya Janus who I manipulated into joining, hahaha. I got the first
question wrong, what do I care what Filipinos offer to Santa Clara for her to stop rain? Can she in
the first place?! Good thing the question was removed for typographical errors:
AND YOU"LL BE SEEING ME THE WEEK AFTER!

Only 8 of us from the mob made
it through to next week. I was disappointed that I won no money though; Mariel
took the money instead of trying to beat us 8. And all I won is just a T-shirt as
one of the “unbeatables”. Oh well. Thought you guys should know I might appear
on the show next Saturday, September 8 since Mariel addressed me often as “the
Physics teacher” to which Edu promptly corrects with “Physics major”. I might
also be seen the week after, but the taping is this Saturday since they’re 2
weeks advanced so I still don’t know.

Pffft! Physics teacher. They wish.
Hahaha!

I watched The Simpsons on my own because my brothers already made plans to watch it with other people. It was ok. The usual Simpsons humor, very witty, very American. But I think they mellowed the jokes down a little since kids might be watching. Anyway, its The Simpsons, so its a good movie; I recommend it.
Simpsons_movie1

Awkward moments on the cinema: I was already laughing at the joke before (after 5-10 seconds) the others laugh.
I rate the movie 6.5/10.

Walking With God

July 30th, 2007 by bouncingneutrinos

By William Cowper

                         Oh for a closer walk with God;

                         A calm and heavenly frame;

A light to shine upon the road

That leads me to the Lamb!

Where is the blessedness I knew

When first I saw the Lord?

                         Where is the soul-refreshing view

                         Of Jesus, and his word?

What peaceful hours I once enjoyed

                         How sweet their memory still!

But they have left an aching void,

                         The world can never fill.

                         Return, O holy Dove, return,

                         Sweet messenger of rest;

I hate the sins that made me mourn

And drove thee from my breast.

My brother, his friend and I watched Ratatouille this evening, my treat for all the good marks my brother scraped on his exams. I was disappointed at his movie selection since I thought Simpsons is the better choice, I thought Ratatouille would be a waste. I was wrong, ah well.

"Anyone can cook!"

I highly recommend it, nothing less from the makers of Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. I give it a smacking 6.5/10! Watch it! I’ll definitely buy the DVD.

7 After 7

July 22nd, 2007 by bouncingneutrinos

I  finished  the 7th and last  installment  of  the Harry Potter series. I don’t give spoilers unless asked so you don’t have to worry that I would give juicy info about Snape.

I  never  was  much of a reader before I read Harry Potter. What I am saying is Rowling probably  made  a reader out of me or that her books brought it out into the open. Only after Harry Potter did I start reading books without hesitations no matter how voluminous they seem.

Memories   gushed   back   at   me  after  I  closed  the  last  book  of  the  series.  I remembered  particularly  a  periodical exams  week  when  instead  of  brushing  up on my subjects, I read Harry Potter books; one for each day of the week.

What  probably  made  me  a  fan  is the feeling of empathy I seem to have towards Harry.  We’re  not  close  and  all, but we seem to share similarities. And no, it’s not magic  nor  the  ability  to make a twig’s tip luminescent. Only simple things like: when Harry was a dormer, I too was.

And  now as I finished the series after 7 years I thoughtfully muse over the fact that it took just as long for me to stop being a dormer.

Some Songs Simply Sting

July 14th, 2007 by bouncingneutrinos
Catch Me I’m FallingToni Gonzaga
"I don’t know whyBut when I look in your eyesI felt something that seems so rightYou’ve got yours I’ve got mineI think I’m losing my mindBut I shouldn’t feel this way
Catch me...I’m falling for youAnd I don’t know what to do
How can something so wrong Feel so right all along Catch me…I’m falling for you
How can time be so wrong? For love to come alongCatch me…I’m falling for you
How can love let it go?When it has no place to goAnd I can’t go along…pretendingThat love isn’t here to stayCatch me I’m falling for you
If I could just walk awayWithout you from day to dayI would die just thinking of youI know we can never beMore than friends, you and meBut why do I feel this way
Catch me…I’m falling for youAnd I don’t know what to do
Maybe someday I’ll seeWhy love did this to meCause I can’t go along…pretendingThat love isn’t here to stayCatch me I’m falling for you
And it’s wrong for me to feel this wayCause I don’t know what to do without youI’M FALLING FOR YOUCatch me…I’m falling for you."
When  I  first  heard  this  song played on the stereosof PHILCOA  jeepneys  I  thought  it  was  a  foreignerwho recorded it  and  only  recently  I  found  out  itwas actually Toni Gonzaga singing.
The  song  has  enough  “ick-factor”  in  it to make myfriend  Lance’s  ears bleed. Thoughtfully I imagine himcringe  if  he  happen  to  hear  this  song,  which heprobably  will  due  to  the  radio  station’s habit ofrepeating a song 1,000,000 times in a day.

“Kailangan pa bang i-memorize yan? Bisyo na ‘to!”
But since  Lance’s  ears  evolved  to  have  a  naturaltendency to stop functioning during such a hypotheticalsituation I  guess he is safe from major blood loss dueto this.
That is, FOR NOW.
Since his  eyes  on  the  other hand, trained to devourbooks  and  stare  on  the   monitor  as he works for atwenty page  lab report do not have such ability, afterreading  this  post  he  might  suffer from hypovolemicshock.Lance_1
At some levels I relate with the song.  I can  sense  Lance’s convulsions starting so I’ll stopthere.

I've  always  acknowledged  Toni  Gonzaga  to  be  VERYPRETTY.  I  forget  she  is  also  a good singer. Now Iwon't.

She actually reminds me a little bit of someone.
